How can I get started with fitness?

Getting started with senior fitness can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some tips to help you get started:

  • Pay attention to your surroundings: If you’re exercising outdoors, pay attention to your surroundings. Look out for uneven surfaces, obstacles, and other hazards.

  • Stay hydrated: Drink water before, during, and after your workout session, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

  • Wear appropriate clothing: Wear appropriate fitness clothes and shoes for your activity. This will help you stay comfortable and avoid injury.

  • Try different activities: Try yoga, tai chi, low-impact aerobics, dancing, or cycling to add variety to your fitness program.

  • Consider water exercise: Water exercise is an excellent option for seniors who are overweight and/or have joint pain.

  • It’s important to note that strength training is also beneficial for seniors. You can incorporate activities like walking and aerobics with strength training exercises. If you’re an older adult looking to establish an exercise routine, you should ideally be able to incorporate 150 minutes of moderate endurance activity into your week.

If you have specific health conditions, discussing your exercise and physical activity plan with your healthcare provider is best. The National Institute on Aging has a helpful guide on how older adults can get started with exercise.

At Senior Fitness Finder, we connect seniors with fitness professionals so they can access dynamic fitness programming that helps them live a more active lifestyle.
